This year it was decided to create a welcoming space through sports and recreation to internalize and enhance generic skills of students entering their first year in one of the courses assigned to the Faculty.

March is the month when classes begin, but there are also those who enter the University for the first time and, with this, receive the “welcome mechana.” The “mechoneo” has been characterized as a milestone of initiation into the university world, a rite that is carried out every year, which is why it has become an old tradition for new students.

The Faculty of Engineering of the ULS, which has openly stated that it is against those activities where the limits of respect for people are transgressed in order to subject them to public shame and damage to their physical integrity, decided to generate this year a welcome space through sports and recreation to internalize and enhance generic skills of students entering the first year in one of the courses assigned to the Faculty.

welcome engineering2Likewise, FIULS seeks to strengthen the tutoring and orientation program for university life, Mentoring, through sports and recreation activities in welcoming new students; internalize generic skills such as teamwork, leadership, effective communication, proactivity, innovation and creativity in their students; eliminate the traditional “mechoneo” carried out by old students towards first-year students, through a positive activity that contributes to the training of students; strengthen students' interpersonal relationships through group dynamics; and promote Good Treatment and camaraderie through various recreational and recreational activities among its students.

In this sense, the Dean of FIULS, Dr. Ing. Mario Durán Lillo, thanked everyone who contributed and supported this activity carried out on Tuesday, March 20, and especially the students who participated.

Within the framework of the conference called “Gender Violence and Prevention: A Task for Everyone”, an activity that was part of the commemoration of the thirty-seventh anniversary of the University of La Serena, the certification of training on violence prevention was carried out. intimate partner violence with a gender perspective, organized by the ULS, the National Service for Women and Gender Equality (SernamEG), the Liwen Women's Center and the Men's Center for a Life without Violence.

These training workshops, aimed at members of the university community and the general public, aimed to promote comprehensive training in participants, with a strong social and professional commitment, developing the themes with certain specifications and with emphasis on their approaches to gender and human rights.

talk violence2During this day, which sought to promote a culture that respects gender differences in the institution and in the region, Dr. Georgina García, in charge of the Inclusion and Gender Table of the ULS, pointed out that these actions are part of the commitment of the state universities for “modifying the culture, policies and practices so that there is a more inclusive and respectful community, and also a profound transformation of the country so that no woman suffers from violence due to her condition (…). “Studies like ours are dedicated to being examples of a culture that is more respectful of gender identity.”

In this sense, the Rector of the ULS, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés, stated that in recent years the University has been addressing highly relevant issues, such as, for example, gender equality, human rights, disability, indigenous peoples, harassment and discrimination. , which reflects that “the institution collaborates on public policies, always at the forefront of the social changes that our society requires.”

For her part, the Regional Director(s) of the National Service for Women and Gender Equality, Nidia Aspe, highlighted the development of joint activities with the University, pointing out that this alliance “began several years ago, but that concrete in 2016 with the signing of a collaboration agreement, whose objective is precisely to generate spaces of inclusion with gender perspectives within the university. As an institution, we tremendously value the openness of this University.”

In addition, he expressed that the first workshops had the support of the DGAE and the Human Resources Directorate, and that they currently receive the collaboration of the Accreditation Office, "that is, there are many instances (of the institution) that are collaborating so that These workshops last over time and continue to grow.”

It is worth remembering that in addition to the agreement signed between the University of La Serena and SernamEG, in 2016 the Inclusion and Gender Roundtable was formed with the purpose of developing joint actions that promote respect for women, such as equality in different areas of institutional, regional and national life.

The activity, held in the Pentagon Room of the ULS, considered the talk “Gender and Violence in the Context of Couples”, given by the regional manager of the Violence against Women Unit, Juan Liempi. University authorities, directors, representatives of the Student Federation, training participants and special guests were present.

Through this ceremony, an entire life dedicated to the training of various generations of professionals of excellence is recognized, with effort, passion and, above all, a lot of talent, which distinguishes each one of you," said the Rector of the ULS, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés.

The authority added that “each of the academics of this university - together with officials, students and graduates - are the ones who build this University day by day. And without a doubt, the great work that they have carried out in these years on our state campus has been fundamental to achieving a series of advances and significant achievements at the institutional level,” he pointed out.

While the distinguished academics with 30 years of service at the university were Jimena Cuccurella Asenjo (Department of Mines) and María Lourdes Campos Carreño (Department of Psychology).

This agreement was signed on December 11, 2017 and allowed 10 students from technical-professional high schools in the Coquimbo Region to carry out their internship in mining, this being the fourth consecutive time that it has been carried out.

During the day of Tuesday, March 20 and within the context of the XXXVII anniversary of the University of La Serena, the presentation of the work of the Faculty of Engineering (FIULS) and MC Inversiones Limitada, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation, took place in the Buenaventura Osorio Room on the Ignacio Domeyko Campus.

On the occasion, it was the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Mario Duran Lillo, who delivered a few words regarding this activity. “For me this is a virtuous unity between the University and the company, allowing this activity to be carried out in our Mine School and in which the students had the opportunity to carry out their internship with the support of Mitsubishi Corporation. This is exemplary work and we are happy with the continuity it has had,” he said.

For his part, the Human Resources Manager of MC Inversiones Limitada, Ricardo García, spoke about the importance for the company of helping to develop work in the mining area at a regional and national level. “For us it is important to maintain this link with the University of La Serena, giving the opportunity to 10 young people from technical schools to acquire and perfect their knowledge in the area of ​​mining, in addition to providing support to two students from the University, from “Mining Engineering and Civil Mining Engineering.”

Evaluations, tours of the campuses, welcome ceremonies, rituals and coexistence were part of the activities carried out by the different Departments, Schools and coordination of the pedagogy careers of the University of La Serena, to welcome the new generations of future ULS teachers .

The objective of this event, developed in five days, is to guide first-year students of pedagogy careers with the beginning of their training in higher education, and motivate them to be part of this new academic culture. In this way, they were able to meet some of the professors, who will teach the subjects, and the administrative staff who will support them in the different academic areas; They delved into the purposes of each study program, toured the facilities that will host them during their initial training, shared with the current Career Student Center, and mainly managed to get acquainted with those who will be their classmates during the next eight semesters.

As a future teacher, I would like to be able to develop new strategies to teach in a different way, not so instructional and unidirectional, and I feel that the University will prepare me with different weapons to be a guide to follow more than a teacher.”

For her part, Aylin Arqueros, from the Pedagogy degree in Basic General Education Ovalle, expressed that the “experience has been very motivating, I have felt part of the same circle. I feel that I will be able to help future generations have a better outlook on life and open their minds to all the possibilities they have. I would like that in the future all educational establishments have the same quality of education, whether private or municipal, with less strict and more recreational days.”

One of the novel receptions was the one carried out by the Pedagogy in Early Childhood Education major, who carried out a light ritual with the purpose of channeling and transmitting good intentions among the students themselves.

In that sense, student Constanza Adaros, who is part of the new generation of educators, says that “the welcome they gave us was very original, because it allowed us to approach our classmates with more confidence. My reason for entering this career was because I feel that educators teach the basis of education to children and here I hope to be able to learn to be a good teacher.”

Not only did the school directors, coordinators, teachers and administrators of the institution participate in these activities, but also the graduates were present in these spaces. This was the case of the now History and Geography teachers, Samuel Olivares, Marta Ruz and Adán López, who shared their experiences and the challenges they had to face once they began working.

“Develop resilience and self-esteem” was one of the pieces of advice given by Professor Samuel, who emphasized the social role that pedagogy plays in the students they are training. For his part, Professor López emphasized the importance of the new teaching career and how it opens up endless opportunities in professional development. Finally, Professor Ruz congratulated them for already being part of the institution and motivated them to make a difference as future History teachers.

The students of the ten pedagogies were able to access the projects and lines of action of each degree program, and fundamentally managed to gain insight into the importance of the teaching role that they will have once they complete their studies, emphasizing in each of the activities that teaching goes beyond of disciplinary knowledge, but involves pedagogical development linked to the social role of the teacher.
