Within the framework of the conference called “Gender Violence and Prevention: A Task for Everyone”, an activity that was part of the commemoration of the thirty-seventh anniversary of the University of La Serena, the certification of training on violence prevention was carried out. intimate partner violence with a gender perspective, organized by the ULS, the National Service for Women and Gender Equality (SernamEG), the Liwen Women's Center and the Men's Center for a Life without Violence.

These training workshops, aimed at members of the university community and the general public, aimed to promote comprehensive training in participants, with a strong social and professional commitment, developing the themes with certain specifications and with emphasis on their approaches to gender and human rights.

talk violence2During this day, which sought to promote a culture that respects gender differences in the institution and in the region, Dr. Georgina García, in charge of the Inclusion and Gender Table of the ULS, pointed out that these actions are part of the commitment of the state universities for “modifying the culture, policies and practices so that there is a more inclusive and respectful community, and also a profound transformation of the country so that no woman suffers from violence due to her condition (…). “Studies like ours are dedicated to being examples of a culture that is more respectful of gender identity.”

In this sense, the Rector of the ULS, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés, stated that in recent years the University has been addressing highly relevant issues, such as, for example, gender equality, human rights, disability, indigenous peoples, harassment and discrimination. , which reflects that “the institution collaborates on public policies, always at the forefront of the social changes that our society requires.”

For her part, the Regional Director(s) of the National Service for Women and Gender Equality, Nidia Aspe, highlighted the development of joint activities with the University, pointing out that this alliance “began several years ago, but that concrete in 2016 with the signing of a collaboration agreement, whose objective is precisely to generate spaces of inclusion with gender perspectives within the university. As an institution, we tremendously value the openness of this University.”

talk violence3Dr. Georgina García recalled that training on intimate partner violence with a gender focus has been carried out since 2011 with the support of SernamEG, the Liwen Women's Center and the Men's Center for a Life without Violence. In addition, he expressed that the first workshops had the support of the DGAE and the Human Resources Directorate, and that they currently receive the collaboration of the Accreditation Office, "that is, there are many instances (of the institution) that are collaborating so that These workshops last over time and continue to grow.”

It is worth remembering that in addition to the agreement signed between the University of La Serena and SernamEG, in 2016 the Inclusion and Gender Roundtable was formed with the purpose of developing joint actions that promote respect for women, such as equality in different areas of institutional, regional and national life.

The activity, held in the Pentagon Room of the ULS, considered the talk “Gender and Violence in the Context of Couples”, given by the regional manager of the Violence against Women Unit, Juan Liempi. University authorities, directors, representatives of the Student Federation, training participants and special guests were present.
