The three Higher Education Institutions (IES) of the Coquimbo Region met at CEDUC UCN.

The PACE teams from ULS, UCN and CEDUC-UCN and representatives from SECREDUC Coquimbo met to analyze the different experiences they have developed to enhance the link between the areas of Preparation for Secondary Education (PEM) and Accompaniment in Higher Education ( AES).

The day considered presentations from each of the HEIs, and then gave space for questions from the attendees.

pace ies2For the Secondary Education Preparation Coordinator of PACE ULS, Loreto Garrido, this meeting was beneficial, since it was possible to glimpse the work carried out by other institutions. “The idea of ​​this day was basically to be able to share how we are working regarding the linking of our two work areas PEM and AES. Therefore, it is necessary to move forward as a PACE Program in articulating actions with the other HEI programs,” she expressed.

For her part, PACE ULS Executive Coordinator, Viviana Romero, indicated that these instances of meetings, between the IES and SECREDUC Coquimbo, call for reflection. “I sincerely believe that they are excellent opportunities for the teams to see that no matter which of them you belong to, we all live the same situations day by day and it is also important to know that you are not alone and that there are teams not only in the Coquimbo Region, but throughout Chile we are contributing to the inclusion and restitution of the right to higher education of the students of the educational establishments assigned to the PACE Program.”

Meanwhile, the Executive Coordinator of the PACE CEDUC-UCN Program, Solange Moreno, explained the objective of this event: “mainly this meeting sought to articulate the levels of secondary and higher education for the analysis and understanding of the challenges faced by young people accompanied in this stage of their lives, and what the Program's PACE teams can strengthen to enhance this transition."

Christian Merino Álvarez, from the Law degree at the University of La Serena, participated in the international colloquium: “Jurilinguistics II, interdisciplinary approaches in the study of Language and Law”, with a work titled: “Language and the dimension mnemonics in the teaching-learning process of law in the 24st century, related to text workshop courses and study techniques. This colloquium was held on October 25, 26 and XNUMX, at the Pablo de Olavide University in Seville, Spain.

The international colloquium or permanent seminar aims to strengthen relationships between professionals and researchers in the linguistic and legal fields. Its purpose is to reflect again on the relationships established and yet to be established between both disciplines, both from the point of view of professionalization and from that of the constitution of areas of study and research.

In this sense, Professor Merino pointed out: “our Law degree has modestly contributed to this strengthening and reflection since 2016 in the region: already by reformulating the Text Workshop/Study Techniques courses in the first year of the degree, already reformulating VET courses. of Legal Research Methodology and the Memory Seminar course, both in the last semesters of the degree.”

The former mayor of the Coquimbo Region received the honorary degree from the Rector of the state campus, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés, who highlighted his outstanding participation as a public man and permanent concern for people's dignity and quality of life.

In a solemn and emotional ceremony marked by memories and expressions of appreciation, the University of La Serena conferred the honorary degree of Doctor Honoris Causa from this house of studies to the former mayor of the Coquimbo Region, Renán Fuentealba Moena, in recognition of his trajectory and its social contribution to the region and the country.

honorary cause 2The Doctor Honoris Causa ULS distinction is conferred on people of Chilean or foreign nationality, by virtue of their merits, for their contribution to the creation or expansion of knowledge in the domains of arts, letters and sciences, as well as to those who have contributed to the improvement of the quality of life of humanity, to the exaltation of the great values ​​of the spirit and of culture and to the common desire to improve the coexistence and dignity of people. That is why in 2017, the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences of the institution presented to the Academic Council and later to the Board of Directors the proposal to distinguish the lawyer and politician with this important degree.

Renán Fuentealba received the honorary degree from the Rector of the state campus, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés, who highlighted that the University of La Serena, "a pluralistic, autonomous and secular institution that promotes the training of professionals and leaders who are capable of contributing to the regional and national development, decided this distinction and in consideration of his high capacity for public service, concern for the quality of life of people and for his high merits, which has earned him regional and national recognition for his important contributions to the Region of Coquimbo, to education and to the country”.

Dr. Arlyn Orellana, academic from the Department of Social Sciences at ULS, will present: “Values ​​associated with technology in relation to people with disabilities.

Scientific communication has been gaining more and more ground in different media, thanks to the work of communicators and researchers who see an urgent need for the scientific community to disseminate its work to the community and how it is behind much of what that surrounds us and impacts our daily lives.

Along these lines, the Multidisciplinary Meeting of Science and Communication is being held for the first time, which is organized by the Alberto Hurtado University (UAH) and will take place this Friday, October 26. The event will bring together prominent personalities from the academic world, research, communication and scientific dissemination. The University of La Serena will be part of this meeting, being represented by Dr. Arlyn Orellana, academic from the Department of Social Sciences, who was selected to participate and present at the “Research in Public Communication of Science” table, with the presentation titled: “Values ​​associated with technology in relation to people with disabilities.”

Dr. Orellana is a journalist from the University of La Serena and has a Master's degree in Social Communication of Science and a Doctor in Plurality, Margination and Integration from the University of Salamanca, Spain. The motivation for her work is to understand science and technology, the world from a scientific-technological point of view and to bring these supposed “two cultures” into dialogue, humanities and social sciences on the one hand and the exact sciences on the other.

“It is essential that journalists who are in training at our University understand and know about these issues, know the language they must use to transmit, to send these messages, in different groups with different characteristics in order to build a society for all” , he pointed.

Dr. Orellana's work is multidisciplinary and focuses on the values ​​presented in the Chilean press in relation to people with disabilities and science and technology. Specifically in how we associate values ​​with certain technologies, and how we end up associating those values ​​with the people who use those technologies, “and how that affects society, the relationship between us, whether the technology prospers or not, how to improve society. towards greater inclusion,” he added.
