Theatrical play “Mathematical Stories Cubed” captivated its audience through simple and entertaining mathematical solutions
The way to re-enchant students with mathematics through the magic of theater has been the great success of this pedagogical comedy.
Around 350 people, mostly students and teachers from schools in Coquimbo and La Serena, participated in this theatrical performance called “Historias Matemágicas al Cubo”, a production that recreates, through three short plays (“En Redes con Polígona” , “Zero Stress” and “The Death of 8”), mathematical concepts in an entertaining way.
This pedagogical comedy is directed by the Theater Cast of the Extension Directorate of the University of La Serena - ÉTÉULS - which, in a playful way and in a familiar and colloquial language, gives students simple teachings about mathematics with the objective to encourage and re-enchant students through representations and exercises in logic, arithmetic, geometry and algebra.
The director of this great theater project, Catalina Cvitanic, stated that she was surprised and very happy with this latest presentation, due to the great turnout and interest that the students showed throughout the entire play and in the discussion, when the performance began. a round of questions. “I am very excited because we have to think that these students are encouraged by their teachers, it is not on their own initiative, so the fact that they enjoy a play where mathematical topics are discussed fills us with pride because we would be fulfilling our purpose with it. But what I find much more valuable is that they are interested in asking questions, and very varied questions, both about the mathematical topics discussed in the play, and those referring to technical aspects of the staging; That is, they show an interest that goes beyond the simple fact of having witnessed a work that has mathematics,” said Cvitanic.
It should be noted that the play was not only of interest to the schools in the region, but also to a Theater Academy, of which five of its students attended this pedagogical work in order to learn and learn about theater techniques. Daniel Aguayo, a member of ÉTÉULS and who personifies “Zero”, expressed his surprise that this mathematical comedy generates cross-cutting interest among different types of audiences. “I was very impressed that a Theater Academy came and asked me about theater techniques, so that is very valuable. “This is a play that anyone can come see because it is entertaining, in addition to the mathematical content it contains,” said the “Zero Stress” actor.
The objective of the Theater Cast, ÉTEULS, is to continue carrying out these pedagogical works and specifically, to end the question of who killed the number 8. Therefore, continuing with this project and making it known to its school audience is its main objective. This intention will materialize again on August 14 when this production opens the curtain again.
