With a ceremony held at the sports venue of the Andés Bello Campus of the University of La Serena, the National Men's University Football Championship of the National University Sports Federation (FENAUDE) began.

16 teams compete in this tournament, which have qualified in their respective regions and will seek to win the trophy and the title of 2016 national champion.

The opening day included the participation of the delegations, who swore to maintain an attitude of healthy competition and fair play.

The athletes also received a welcome greeting from the Coordinator of the Department of Physical Education and Sports of the State University, Jaime Sarah San Martín, who highlighted the importance of holding this type of competition at the university level. The ceremony concluded with the presentation of the Tuna Femenina Azahares from the University of La Serena, who delighted those present with their performances.

The round of matches began simultaneously on the two fields of the Andrés Bello Campus, with the matches of the teams from the Universidad de Playa Ancha and the Universidad de La Serena, which tied 1-1; while the Universidad Católica del Maule defeated the Universidad Católica del Norte 4 to 1.

The championship considers a three-day eliminatory phase (from Tuesday to Thursday), and then moves on to the second phase on Friday. From this will come the teams that, during the weekend, will play the semifinals and final of the tournament.
