ULS organizes XI Latin American Congress of Statistical Societies

The meeting seeks to enhance knowledge and dissemination of Statistics as a contribution to regional and national progress, strengthening ties of cooperation for the joint development of scientific research.

From October 20 to 23, the XI Latin American Congress of Statistical Societies (CLATSE 2014) and the XLI National Statistics Conference will take place in La Serena, scientific events organized by the University of La Serena, the Chilean Statistical Society (SOCHE). , with the collaboration of academics from various universities in Chile, and which brings together professionals in the area of ​​statistics, students, academics and prominent speakers from the country and abroad.

CLATSE 2014 - which is financed by the competition implemented by the Academic Vice-Rector's Office and the Research Directorate of the ULS for the holding of international conferences - seeks to enhance the knowledge and dissemination of Statistics as a contribution to regional and national progress, strengthening the ties of cooperation for the joint development of scientific research not only in Statistics, but also in the wide spectrum of scientific disciplines that apply it and contribute to its improvement.

At the opening of the Congress, prepared jointly by SOCHE, the Argentine Statistical Society (SAE) and the Uruguayan Statistical Society (SUA), the Rector of the host university, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés, was present, who highlighted that the University of La Serena, as a state and regional university, has assumed a firm commitment to strengthening scientific development, "and participating in the organization of these conferences, through the Department of Mathematics, is an example of this commitment." 

The coordinator of the event, Dr. Carlos Navarrete, academic from the ULS Department of Mathematics, explained that CLATSE has been held since 1991, every two or three years, as a way to contribute to the integration of Ibero-American Statistics societies and associations. 

statistics congress 2For her part, the president of the Chilean Statistical Society, Dr. Gloria Icaza, thanked the University of La Serena, the local and national organizers and those from Argentina and Uruguay for their welcome, “because we know that this requires a tremendous effort.” ”, adding that as statistical societies of developing countries and as statisticians, “we have a great commitment.”

Among the invited speakers are: Dr. María José García (Faculty of Mathematics, MIDE-UC Measurement Center, PUC, Chile), Dr. Adelchi Azzalini (Dipartimento di Scienze Statistiche, Università di Padova, Italy), Dr. Alejandra Martínez (Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina), Dr. Marta Quaglino (School of Statistics, Faculty of Economic Sciences and Statistics, National University of Rosario, Argentina), Dr. Juan José Goyeneche (Institute of Statistics, Faculty of Economic Sciences, U. de La República, Uruguay), and Dr. Sándor Baran (Department of Applied Mathematics and Probability Theory, University of Debrecen, Hungary). 

The opening lecture of this Congress was given by Dr. Fabrizio Ruggeri (Research Director, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Italy; Adjunct Professor, Queensland University of Technology, Australia; International Professor Affiliate, New York University, USA), who explained: “ On Bayesian estimation of thermal diffusivity in materials.

Present on this first day were the Rector Avilés, the dean of the ULS Faculty of Sciences, Dr. Gustavo Labbé, the director of Postgraduate and Postgraduate Studies, Dr. Jorge Rojas, the director of Research, Dr. Eduardo Notte, the director of the Department of Mathematics, Dr. Marco Corgini, the president of SUA, Dr. Juan José Goyeneche, the president of SAE, Ernesto Rosa, and the president of SOCHE, Dr. Gloria Icaza.

It is worth mentioning that parallel to these meetings, the XLII Argentine Statistics Colloquium is held.
