"20 years of the Chilean Memory website" closes the commemoration program for the 50 years of the Civic-Military coup

With the presentation of the 20 years of Chilean Memory website, an activity that was attended by the director of the National Library, María Soledad Abarca de la Fuente, the program of fourteen activities that took place from July to November 2023 at the University of La Serena in commemoration of the 50 years of the civic-military coup, delivering a varied offer of initiatives to the entire university and regional community, focused on the thematic axes: memory, education and future. On this occasion, in a hybrid manner, the presentation was made on the 20 years of the Chilean Memory website, a platform that offers research and documents related to the key topics that make up the identity of Chile, organized through the areas of History, Literature, Social Sciences, Music and Visual Arts.

In this regard, the Rector of the house of higher education, Dr. Luperfina Rojas Escobar, highlighted that “as the University of La Serena we respect history as a witness to the past and as a precedent for the present that we have built from it. The National Library of Chile, founded on August 19, 1813, is one of the oldest in Latin America and has been the main center for the collection and preservation of Chile's bibliographic heritage for more than two centuries. “Its mission to collect, preserve and disseminate the knowledge and information contained in its collections is crucial for the intellectual and cultural development of our country.” Furthermore, she emphasized that “this event is a testimony of our continued commitment to the preservation of our history and the promotion of education and memory in our country.”

For her part, María Soledad Abarca, director of the National Library, appreciated being part of the closing commemoration activity from the ULS: “Happy to join on this date, understanding that in addition, based on our collections that safeguard many materials that They are the source of memory, we can contribute to this commemoration and period of reflection, making known the events of 50 years ago and making it a social movement that finally is also based on those documents, on those traces that our ancestors left us, newspapers, magazines, manuscripts, radio programs, audios, all those collections that subsist in memory collections.”

Furthermore, Abarca de la Fuente referred to the platform of the National Library and its presentation: “this coincides with the 20 years of Chilean Memory, which has been a platform that we believe has changed access to information, knowledge, art, to the culture that is expressed in all media, which is very diverse and which has allowed us to reach many more places and we want to continue doing so, continue innovating.”

This activity was organized by the University of La Serena, from the School of Law and the Academic Vice-Rector's Office through its units: General Area of ​​Rights and Duties for Comprehensive Training, the Teaching Directorate - from the Library System - and the Directorate of Linkage with the Environment and Extension.

Protocol greeting from the National Library Director

Prior to this activity, Rector, Dr. Luperfina Rojas, received a ceremonial visit from the Director of the National Library, within the framework of her visit to the university to participate in "20 years of the Chilean Memory website."

During the meeting, the important work carried out by the National Library of Chile in the preservation of bibliographic heritage and access to knowledge was highlighted, and its adaptation to current times, integrating various technologies and platforms so that the community can access its physical and digital collections. .

In addition, both authorities expressed their willingness to develop joint activities and formalize a collaboration agreement between these institutions.

On the occasion, the Director of the National Library, María Soledad Abarca, delivered to the ULS Rector various publications for the "Irma Salas Silva" Central Library, while Dr. Luperfina Rojas did the same by delivering books from the ULS Publishing House. for the National Library.
