Senator Matías Walker meets with ULS Rector and provides support for the implementation of the Medicine degree

During the meeting with Dr. Luperfina Rojas, the Senator expressed his willingness to support the completion of this important project that will benefit the inhabitants of the Coquimbo Region.

The Medicine program at the University of La Serena was the central topic addressed by the Rector of the state campus, Dr. Luperfina Rojas, and Senator Matías Walker, who gave his support to the implementation of said program and the construction of its facilities, project which he also described as a "regional cause" and which must have the necessary support for its realization.

The Senator highlighted the meeting held with Dr. Rojas in the ULS Headquarters, pointing out that the implementation of the Medicine degree is a challenge “to which we are absolutely committed, we know that the realization of the Medicine degree It is a purpose not only of the institution, its authorities and the university community, but it is a regional challenge. I am aware of the commitment of the Medical College and the health unions with this important project that is closely related to the launch of the new hospitals in La Serena, Coquimbo and Illapel."

Furthermore, he added that the creation of this undergraduate program should be a “commitment of all the authorities of the Coquimbo Region, with coordination with the Governor and the regional councilors. I know of the commitment that the Regional Government has with this project and I have no doubt that, by combining all efforts, we will have that first stone of ULS Medicine in the year 2025.”

For her part, the Rector, Dr. Luperfina Rojas, valued the support given by Senator Walker to the Medicine career, indicating that he is a defender of public education and that on this occasion “he came to provide us with his support and collaboration to that the University of La Serena can offer this degree in 2025. The Senator conveyed to us his willingness to support this project, given the urgent need that the region has for health professionals and, furthermore, that this university, "The only state in the Coquimbo Region, which can carry out this very important initiative and which will directly benefit all the inhabitants of our territory and the country."

Rector Rojas also added that “the support that we are requesting from the Regional Government is not something extraordinary, but is similar to the support that other state universities in other regions have received, to teach the degree, which due to its high implementation cost, It requires shared efforts, also considering the great impact that having doctors with the social seal that a university like ours can give to its graduates would have for the region,” he explained.
