Various Rankings show a notable increase in the scientific quality of the ULS

The University of La Serena is in third place among national schools whose publications cause the greatest impact in the academic world.

The University of La Serena once again stands out among higher education institutions in the quality of scientific productivity generated by its academics, with a high percentage of publications in first-quartile journals, as demonstrated by measurements.

It is not only detailed by the Group of Advanced Studies on University Education, Gea Universitas in El Mercurio, but also in the 22nd version of the University Ranking published by La Tercera. (Emol: https://bit.ly/3JeDDSe / Third: https://bit.ly/3Fw80l2)

For the Vice-Rector for Research and Postgraduate Studies at the University of La Serena, Dr. Eduardo Notte Cuello, the ULS has had a very positive evolution in its scientific activity, “currently the rankings are considering not only the number of publications in the study of development of university research, also this year they have considered a normalization of the data, which comes to highlight the work carried out by smaller institutions.”

In this sense, Dr. Notte explained that “particularly for the year 2021, the SCImago Research Group Ranking, which has been published by Tercera, has incorporated a new indicator in the research ranking, this is the number of publications that a public institution in first quartile Q1 journals, in this indicator the ULS is at No. 1 at the national level with 59,80% of works published in Q1 journals, for us it is very gratifying and of course we recognize all the academics for the great performance that the University has had in terms of research.”

The Gea Universitas ranking places the ULS in 11th place in the variable of annual publications by total number of academics. This means an approximation of academic performance in research, calculating data from the last three years of articles published in the Web of Science database.

In the same measurement, the ULS appears in third place among schools whose publications cause the greatest impact in the academic world. According to El Mercurio, this is mainly due to the role of Astronomy as a key piece of the outstanding performance in this indicator, which is based on international data that reflects the impact caused by the knowledge generated by the ULS, on the scientific community. The relevance of this variable lies in the quality of the research work provided by the university.

A third interesting aspect that the study reflects is the amount of resources that universities raise through ANID public contests (Fondecyt contests). This indicator is constructed from the results of the latest competitions awarded, considering the total amount of resources awarded in the last year and is related to the total number of academics assigned to the institution. In that sense, the ULS is ranked 11th.

For its part, the University Ranking published by Tercera details that in the research quality indicator, the University of La Serena is positioned in 6th place, rising 14 places compared to the previous measurement; This is thanks to the fact that approximately 60% of the works of ULS academics are published in scientific journals that are located in the highest 25% of each knowledge category, called Q1.

The ranking extracts information from the Ibero-American Ranking of Higher Education Institutions, SIR Iber 2021, which has been prepared since 2009 by SCImago Research Group. Added to this indicator are the number of publications (output) and the impact they have on the international scientific community (normalized impact). --

Positive results that position the University of La Serena among the best higher education institutions nationwide in terms of research, the result of strengthening the research-promoting ecosystem developed by the ULS and its institutional strategy in this area.

The previous results are complemented by the contribution made in terms of research with social impact and incorporation of creation and innovation, which contributes to improving people's quality of life and enhancing our territory.
