The Directorate of Research and Development (DIDULS) is attached to the Vice-Rectory for Research and Postgraduate Studies (VIP), this is the former Directorate of Research, which with the purpose of strengthening applied research and the new guidelines that the VIP entails changes its name . The DIDULS is the unit in charge of the support, promotion, follow-up and transversal coordination of the research and development activities carried out by the basic academic units. It carries out the survey of the actions and results of said activities, having to supervise the coherence of these with the Strategic Plan of Institutional Development.

Policies on basic research, applied research and training of advanced human capital are present in the mission and vision of the University of La Serena, and respond to the Institutional Strategic Plan through different actions and mechanisms, these indicate the following:

Policy on Research

"The University of La Serena conducts its research activities in a focused manner, within the framework of national and international standards traditionally accepted and recognized by the scientific, technological and disciplinary community and by the terms of reference that determine the accreditation of these activities to institutional level. Targeting is precisely explained by the potential for achieving these levels and the gradual strengthening of potential new disciplinary foci. It is expected that the products of the generation of knowledge as public goods derived from the Creation, Research and Development and Innovation (R & D + i), have regional and national relevance, generate a scientific and social impact. It is part of the institutional policy that the activities of Creation and I + D + i increase through achieving greater productivity and effectiveness of the human resources available to the university, including strategic alliances with other institutions. "
