radio history

This station was born on August 26, 1963, the anniversary day of the former School of Mines, in La Serena, later the headquarters of the State Technical University. Since 2004, this date has been considered the anniversary of the university radio station as a result of the Corporation's permanent policy to preserve and exalt the traditions of the organizations that gave rise to the University of La Serena.

The putting on the air of this radio station, the third oldest in the area, materialized a student concern for having a means of dissemination that would inform about educational, cultural, artistic and other subjects.

The first transmitter of only 100 watts of power, the tenth of what its similar ones operate with, was built by the then director of the headquarters Eduardo Aguirre Ortiz, who in turn was the first director of the station. It transmitted from the UTE workshops building on Anfión Muñoz street. Together with its director, the electricity professor Rafael Fernández and the technician Régulo Gayoso collaborated in its construction.

After the station became Frequency Modulated in the mid-80s and after successive stages of improvement in the technological aspect, today it has modern equipment that allows it to deliver a quality broadcast, in accordance with what it must offer. and represent a university communication medium. Added to this are the cooperation agreements with international stations such as La Voz de los Estados Unidos de América, Radio France Internacional and Radio Exterior de España.

The use of new technologies and the investment in equipment have allowed the University Radio facilities to be modernized and, unlike its origins, it currently enables continuous transmission 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Since 2006, it has broadcast its signal online, which allows it to go from a radio station with local coverage (mainly the communes of La Serena and Coquimbo) to one with a global nature.
