Schoolchildren from five schools participated in “The University open to boys and girls” CREDEULS

The little visitors enthusiastically toured different campuses and facilities of the U. de La Serena, interacting with academics, professionals and students of the university.

An entertaining and unforgettable day was experienced by nearly 200 schoolchildren from the Arturo Prat, Alonso de Ercilla, Villa San Bartolomé, Darío Salas and Carlos Condell de la Haza schools, belonging to the Las Compañías sector in La Serena, who gave life to “La University open to boys and girls”, an initiative organized by the Regional Center for Educational Studies and Development of the University of La Serena (CREDEULS).

Through the project “In Companies you learn as a Family”, directed by the ULS academic, Dr. María Teresa Juliá, and financed by the Carmen Goudie Foundation, the second version of this meeting was held, which seeks to expand and diversify the sociocultural spaces and resources of children and their families.

uopen 2The 5th and 6th grade students who participated are those whose parents have been part of the different educational instances of the project. In this way, they were able to see the departments of Biology, Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry, FM University Radio, the Bicentennial Monumental Clock, the Gymnasium and the Central House on the Andrés Bello Campus. 

At the Ignacio Domeyko Campus, they visited the departments of Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Civil Works Engineering; dependencies of the Kinesiology and Dentistry careers; the Central Library and the Mineralogical Museum. 

While at the Isabel Bongard Campus, they toured the Park, workshops of the School of Design, the Language Center and a Fair prepared by the Architecture, Nursing, Psychology and PED majors. in Musical Education, concluding all together in the premises of the ULS Mining Circus, enjoying a performance prepared for them by some of its members.

Jasna Barría, a student at the Arturo Prat School, commented that “I thought the visit was super cool, in fact, I had a super, super good time. I really liked the University,” while her classmate, Jayleen Jofré, mentioned that “I had never come, this is the first time and I was impressed.” Both students were delighted with the Zumba class that the teacher from the Department of Physical Education and Sports gave them in the Gym.

uopen 3For his part, Benjamín Cuéllar, from the Alonso de Ercilla School, pointed out that “it is fun to come and visit things that I had not known. It's good because it's the first time I've entered a radio station, the lunch is delicious. “I had never imagined a University so big, so beautiful.” Likewise, the young student stated that his favorite moment was the Robotics exhibition.

As Claudia Esquivel, professor at the Arturo Prat Chacón School, highlighted, this was a great opportunity. “I have asked everyone and they all leave happy, they have behaved excellently, so yes, very nice. The more times this meeting can be held, it opens up expectations for them. Three (said), very confident, 'I'm coming to the University,'” she declared.

In addition to Dr. María Teresa Juliá and the CREDEULS team, the activity included the participation of student centers from Pedagogy in Basic General Education, Ped. in Early Childhood Education and Psychology, who were the monitors of the different groups, guiding this experience lived by students, parents and teachers from the schools invited to this day at the University of La Serena.
