Undersecretary Cardoch at the ULS: “This government will unrestrictedly protect the right to freedom of expression, of the press and of information”

At the University of La Serena, Nicole Cardoch invited the conference “World Press Freedom Day 2024”, which Chile will host on May 2,3, 4 and XNUMX.

The Undersecretary General of Government, Nicole Cardoch, visited the University of La Serena, where she shared with the Rector, Dr. Luperfina Rojas, and made an invitation to the 31st Conference “World Press Freedom Day 2024”, of the that Chile will host on May 2,3 and 4.

"Today we have highlighted the historical importance of holding this event in our country, which will put Chile at the center of the discussion of how journalism and communication continues to advance in an increasingly threatening society, with challenges that today tomorrow are related to the development of digital platforms, misinformation, digital literacy and, above all, what journalists experience in conflict zones in the world today,” stated the Undersecretary.

Before a full room, in which there were university authorities and journalism students from the ULS, Cardoch made a call to “be part of this world press freedom day and that we continue building a more plural media space and that journalists Rest assured that this government will unrestrictedly protect people's right to freedom of expression, freedom of the press and freedom of information." 

The conference is organized by UNESCO and will bring together experts from different parts of the world. On this occasion, journalism will be its central axis in the face of the current environmental crisis.

Regarding the important visit and invitation made by the Undersecretary, the ULS Rector, Dr. Luperfina Roja, indicated that “for us it has been a pleasure to share with the Undersecretary of Government, mainly because she came to invite us and show this activity that will be so relevant for our country and above all, the possibility that he could share with our journalism students, where his words were tremendously inspiring about press freedom and its importance in achieving a more just and equitable society for all.”

For her part, the Undersecretary General of Government, Nicole Cardoch, thanked the university for this opportunity. “This is my first visit to the University of La Serena in my capacity as Undersecretary and I want to thank the Rector for opening the doors of the university, the School of Journalism and all the students who participated in this talk regarding the conference of the World Press Freedom Day, highlighting the importance of holding this event in our country and inviting everyone to be part of it.”

Finally, the Seremi of Government of the Coquimbo Region, Paulina Mora, added that “for us this is a very important milestone, where we have the participation of our Undersecretary General of Government, and who seeks to provide information regarding the next Conference of World Press Freedom Day, an event that positions us as one of the references in matters of communication and the right to information.”
