ULS Cultural Scene, Spotlight for artists and cultural agents of the Coquimbo Region

For this project, the second semester focused on the development of mainly performing, musical and cinematographic activities, consolidating an important showcase for regional artists.

Without a doubt, the cultural artistic environment experienced a series of consequences as a result of the pandemic, however, for the members of the team that makes up the ULS 2093 Project, Cultural Scene, this scenario prompted them to challenge their creativity when planning the activities for achieve its objective: Promote participation and artistic-cultural development in the Coquimbo Region.

Through joint work with cultural agents internal and external to our institution, they focused their attention on the performing, musical and cinematographic sector of our region. This is how during this semester, they managed to carry out 27 workshops via the Zoom platform (12 for appreciation, 10 for training and 5 for co-creation), attracting the participation of more than 280 people. In addition, activities were carried out such as conversations about regional artistic work, the programming of the radio program "Diálogos en Escena" broadcast every Friday on University Radio, the development of Audiovisual Capsules for the dissemination of regional artistic work, among other activities.

Mauricio Ortiz, coordinator of the Cultural Scene project, points out that it has been key to generate meeting spaces with the various cultural agents for articulation and collaborative work "Virtual work has allowed us to connect with various people from throughout the regional territory, for this reason We placed emphasis on the development of activities for meetings between cultural agents, through the “Cultural Scene Tables” and the “Cultural Scene Meetings” in which cultural managers, producers and artists from the provinces of Elqui, Limarí and Choapa participate and that together they have already begun planning activities for next year.

The voice of experts in the regional artistic sector

The proposal made by Escena Cultural ULS, to achieve a great artistic and cultural transformation in the Coquimbo region, has had a positive assessment among regional experts. Rodrigo Zarricueta, Executive Director of Teatro Puerto, points out: “it is positive because it manages to “make visible what different organizations that work on the arts in the region are doing creatively in terms of management and production. I believe that it should be established with a project or program from La Serena University that is consistent with the cultural and artistic sector of the region.”

Daniela Serani, Executive Director of the Los Vilos Cultural Bodegón highlights the role played by the ULS, pointing out “I encourage the university to resume its role as the main activator of knowledge and development, this constitutes a great contribution not only to La Serena and Coquimbo, but than the entire region. This action revalues ​​the historical role that public universities have had in the cultural and artistic development of the territories.”

On the other hand, for Camila López, audiovisual director and member of the Regional Collective of Women Audiovisualists Various, this project “is listening to various cultural agents and artists, allowing the construction to come from the grassroots, which is rarely seen” in turn. He highlighted that “it is linking the different areas and it is a tremendous job. “Art is dialogue and any public university has to promote it.”

The director of the Círculo Remolino Foundation and Galumping Festival, Gabriel Silva, also referred to the importance of having a regional body such as Cultural Scene, “This body allows us to combine some criteria and collaborate with different groups and actors in the region and allows us to allows us to continue moving forward” on the responsibility of public entities, he added: “there is an intrinsic responsibility of public entities to be able to provide time and spaces for discussion and reflection and for the aesthetic enjoyment of the arts.”
