High school students participated in ULS pedagogy classes

The initiative is part of the work carried out by the I Want to Be a Professional in Education (QSPE) program, which seeks to develop the teaching identity in secondary school students who express interest in being a teacher.

In a week of classes, 25 fourth-year students from various educational establishments in the province of Elqui had the opportunity to attend remote university classes with first- and second-year pedagogy students, managed by the Preparation and Access program, belonging to to the ULS Academic Vice-Rector's Office, in order to share and participate in academic activities, as if they were just another university student.

The objective of the activity was for the students to know what and how is taught in the subjects that make up the pedagogy curriculum, courses in which they will be regular students in 2021. In total there were 9 subjects that are taught in six of the eleven pedagogies of the institution that were made available to the students so that they could choose those of their interest.

The program coordinator, Dr. Karla Campaña, explained: “the students have completed half of the QSPE training program. This allows us to affirm that they have developed a series of skills and have explored their vocational interests, actions that allow them to be in a position to know the career for which they entered the program. I thank the academics of the subjects who welcomed and made the students participate in their classes, as well as the computer support provided by CICULS."

In this context, Constanza Órdenes, a student at the Diego de Almeyda School in Coquimbo, who wants to study Pedagogy in Spanish and Philosophy, indicated: “I thought it was a very good experience, it will help me in my training, to have a clearer idea of how they could be the classes and be able to prepare for it.” The student entered the Genesis and Fundamentals of General Literature and Development of Thinking Skills classes taught in the first year of Pedagogy in Spanish and Philosophy.

For her part, Lourdes Largo, a student at the María Educa School in Coquimbo, entered the Culture and Civilization classes of Pedagogy in History and Geography and classes in Ped. in Spanish and Philosophy, she specified: “the history class was much more than I expected. I loved the topic the teacher addressed by showing us images and timelines. It was a pleasure to be in her class, I was left wanting to continue listening and learning. Regarding the other class, I took it just out of curiosity. It was good, but I realized that it is definitely not my thing, it is not something that I was inspired by.”

During the second semester, it is expected to continue developing these instances with the aim of offering students reliable and first-source information about the pedagogy curriculum of the University of La Serena, so that schoolchildren who have a great interest in studying pedagogical careers , make a conscious and informed decision regarding your future as a teacher.
