Fourth grade students from Colegio San José de La Serena learned and had fun with EclipCiencia ULS

Boys and girls were able to learn about an innovative way to see the eclipse, through a box made with recyclable materials, which makes it safe and friendly to the environment.

In order to educate students and make known the importance of the astronomical phenomenon that will occur on July 2, the EclipCiencia ULS team visited the San José de La Serena School and internalized and familiarized girls and boys with the concepts of the solar eclipse.

eclipscience2The coordinator of the activity and in charge of the Education area of ​​the Science and Technology Dissemination team, Sue Ugalde, commented that this dynamic is carried out in 3 stages called work zones: the first to learn and become familiar with the pinhole projection, using the cardboard box adapted for these purposes; the second with spatial puzzles, where there are mental games; and the third part through a game of dice on a rug where they answer challenges regarding astronomy in general.

These instances are mainly recreational, so that students have “significant learning with new experiences and on a topic as contingent as the total eclipse that will be recorded in our region,” said Ugalde, who took advantage of the opportunity to thank Colegio San José for the cordial reception.eclipscience3

The head teacher of 4th Basic A, Bernardita Valenzuela, said that “as a pedagogical model it is very significant because it is very practical, through play they learn, transmitting their experience to their homes. “I am very grateful to have allowed the children to have an unusual experience in the classroom.”

The Science and Technology Dissemination team, attached to the ULS Vice-Rector's Office for Research and Postgraduate Studies, has carried out constant work with educational establishments in the Coquimbo Region, with the aim of providing knowledge to the community, in this case, information pertinent about the eclipse.
