Dr. Arlyn Orellana spoke about the values ​​associated with technology in relation to people with disabilities.

The academic of the Department of Social Sciences, attached to the Faculty of Cs. Social and Economic Sciences of the University of La Serna, Dr. Arlyn Orellana McBride, participated as a speaker in the Multidisciplinary Meeting of Science and Communication, which was held this October 26 at the Alberto Hurtado University, Santiago.

It was the first meeting of its kind in Chile, in which around 200 people from the field of communications and scientific research participated. The activity brought together exponents of the professional and academic community dedicated to the issues of public communication of science (CPC) to discuss the current challenges in the matter, such as reducing the gender gap, improving the community dedicated to these topics and the visibility of science and national scientific production in the media, both in Chile and abroad.

“The experience of participating in this meeting was very relevant, as it allowed the University of La Serena to position itself among the institutions that, in addition to doing science, seek to disseminate this knowledge. On the other hand, I had the opportunity to strengthen academic ties with different specialists in both science communication and scientific dissemination and teaching of science in Chile,” commented Dr. Orellana.

Regarding the presentation “Values ​​associated with technology in relation to people with disabilities”, the academic indicated that the results of a research on the values ​​associated with technologies and people with disabilities (PSD) in Chile were presented. through qualitative analysis of journalistic texts.

“The results indicate a majority presence of references that convey a positive image of technological techniques and devices. Among the positive evaluations, the idea that technologies provide opportunities, helps to have more independence and produces improvements in the quality of life of the PSD stands out. The most relevant negative characteristics found convey the idea of ​​technology as an element of difficulty within society; as well as difficult to access due to its high cost,” he explained.
