The academic from the U. of Chile closed the 2017 cycle of the unit's Colloquiums and was the guest at the 100th program of “El Club Cuántico”, an opportunity in which he highlighted the work done by the team in bringing science to the community .

Dr. Carlos Conca Rosende, full professor at the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Chile and 2003 National Prize for Exact Sciences, participated in various activities, who visited the Department of Mathematics at the University of La Serena, invited by the "The Quantum Club" program.

The multimedia space, broadcast by Radio Universitaria FM and through the online channel www.youtube.com/elclubcuantico, concluded its sixth season in 2017, precisely reaching program 100 at the end of December. For this reason, the team made up of the Director of the Department of Mathematics, Dr. Marco Corgini Videla, and the journalist Ingrid Torres Castillo, wanted to celebrate with a special guest.

Dr. Conca talked about how he came to mathematics and what he finds so inspiring about it. Also about the artistic component of this science, the power of abstraction in the development of the human mind, his current work, how he sees the future perspectives of young scientists and about the changes that the country must make to improve its indexes. in science and technology, among other topics.

Of course, program 100 is now available on the channel from YouTube of “The Quantum Club”.

Previously, the guest carried out other activities at the ULS. For example, he visited the Faculty of Sciences, where he met with the Dean(s), Dr. Héctor Reyes Serrano, in the company of Dr. Marco Corgini. On the occasion, they talked about projects, undergraduate and graduate programs, international research and development experiences, etc. The Dean (s) highlighted the visit of the National Prize for Exact Sciences to the institution and the Director of the Department of Mathematics valued and thanked the support that the macro-unit constantly provides for scientific progress and related activities promoted by the academic units.

Dr. Carlos Conca was also the protagonist of a new episode of "The Interview on DMATV", hosted by Dr. Corgini in www.youtube.com/matematicasuls and where scientists share different aspects of their life, work, hobbies and much more, in a pleasant conversation. One of these topics to which he referred was his special "relationship with education, with teaching, with students... it is something that, perhaps, is the first of my passions in mathematics", he stressed, since being able to transmit what What he has learned in this science is something fundamental for him and that gives meaning to his own development as a mathematician.

In the afternoon, he closed the 2017 cycle of the “Colloquiums of the Department of Mathematics”, which totaled a record number of 18 talks this year. There he presented his work entitled "Mathematical Models behind the Electro-Chemistry of the Olfactory System", which is part of what he is currently doing in terms of modeling and which he has dedicated to trying to incorporate mathematics into technology and also to understanding problems. of a national character.

“This was a luxurious closing of our activities in 2017, both in the case of our cycle of colloquiums and the radio program. Professor Conca is an example of what a university academic should be in terms of versatility and knowledge, not only regarding his specialty, but also regarding culture in general. In this sense, he left a very important message to all of us: academic life has many facets and we must be prepared to move easily between them”, pointed out Dr. Marco Corgini.
