The Chemistry Olympics organized by the ULS come to a successful conclusion

The organizers, students, teachers and representatives of the Provincial Directorate of Education participated in the closing ceremony.

With a Television Studio full of enthusiastic and excited students, the Regional Chemistry Olympiads organized each year by the University of La Serena came to an end, with the aim of bringing together students from different schools and high schools in the region around the science that studies the composition and properties of matter.

closing olympics2The ceremony that began with the words of the regional president of the activity, the academic of the ULS Department of Chemistry, Abraham Ledezma Rivera, was also attended by the Rector of the university, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés Pizarro, the representative from the Provincial Directorate of Education, Hernán Abarca Godoy, authorities from the Department of Chemistry, university professors and special guests.

In the event, more than 200 students from the Coquimbo Region participated, coming from the provinces of Elqui, Limarí and Choapa.

In the opening speech, Abraham Ledezma pointed out that the University of La Serena has its doors open to those who want to study any of the courses it teaches, and that is why these Olympics have the character of being a comprehensive activity open to all. the community, always thanking the enthusiasm shown by the teachers, some of whom are ULS alumni, and especially the students who participated in the 2017 version.

At the awards ceremony, recognitions were given to the second, third and fourth year students who participated. Likewise, a diploma of distinction for preparation and participation was awarded to the teachers who classified students with the best regional scores in the October 2017 evaluation, two bronze medals of the five that are awarded in the final stage at the national level, those that fell to the students Álvaro Quintana, from the Francis School in Coquimbo, and Gianfranco Lettura, belonging to the Sagrados Corazones School in La Serena.

closing olympics3On the occasion, distinctions were also awarded to the teachers who supported the students who reached the final stage held in Valparaíso, among them, Fernanda González, from Colegio Sagrados Corazones, and Ramón Olivares, from Francis School.

Added to these are the medals of Merit awarded to all students who passed the stages from September to November 2017, a distinction with a prize of honor to the Rector of the University of La Serena, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés, for the support provided, and a galvano recognition to the Director of the Department of Chemistry.

During the ceremony, and as an important part of the closing of the Chemistry Olympics, Dr. Francisco Gajardo, academic and researcher of the Department of Chemistry, gave the conference called “Undergraduate Chemistry.”
