In order to involve the entire community that surrounds the educational establishment, the closing of the VI version of the Artistic Education Week was held in Plaza Independencia in the Antena sector, in the city of La Serena.

A great festival of culture, in which the educational community of the Pedro Aguirre Cerda School made up of: directors, teachers, educational assistants, students of all levels shared their artistic talents with parents, guardians and the entire community present. in the square next to the establishment.

The opening activity of the VI Week was the concert by the Villanueva Ensemble of La Serena and the presentation of the outstanding musician and teacher of the University of La Serena, Raúl “Talo” Pinto along with students from the establishment's 4th grade.

The third day of the Artistic Education Week was marked by the visit of the Willka Aru workshop of the Nuestra Señora de Andacollo de Las Compañías school, which together with its teacher José Chirino, delighted the entire school community with part of its repertoire .

The fourth day was led by the school's cello quartet, directed by teacher Adriana Aquea, who performed a mini concert for the students of the music elective at the Christ School of Las Compañías, together with the student Alejandra Cortés from that establishment, who has been playing the cello for three years.

An extension concert at the Nuestra Señora de Andacollo School marked the fifth day of the VI Week of Artistic Education at the Pedro Aguirre Cerda School, which was impeccably performed by the establishment's Latin American Symphony Orchestra.

Representatives of the ULS, UCN and CEDUC UCN held a meeting at the offices of the Ministerial Secretariat of Education of the region.

The three Higher Education Institutions (IES) of the region attached to the Program for Accompaniment and Access to Higher Education (PACE) officially met with the new Ministerial Regional Secretary of Education, Luis Tello González, in order to present the achievements obtained by the program in the area.

The PACE Program is a measure implemented by the country's Ministry of Education and executed by 31 HEIs, including 29 universities, 1 Professional Institute and 1 Technical Training Center (CFT), who accompany secondary education students from 574 educational establishments. in 311 communes, of the 15 regions of the country, three of which are in the Coquimbo Region: Universidad de La Serena (ULS), Universidad Católica del Norte (UCN) and the CEDUC-UCN Technical Training Center.

That is why, jointly, the three HEIs presented relevant figures to the regional authority of their respective efforts in the implementation of PACE within their work plan. It should be noted that according to figures provided by the Seremi of Education, Luis Tello, the Coquimbo Region is the one with the largest number of students benefiting from the Accompaniment and Effective Access to Higher Education Program at the national level. To which he added that this measure will continue this year, providing support to all students in the country, especially students belonging to a vulnerable context.

On the other hand, the Executive Coordinator of the PACE ULS Accompaniment Program, Viviana Romero, pointed out that the “importance of this meeting is to be able to inform the new authorities of the Regional Ministerial Secretariat of Education about the progress of the PACE Program, in addition to pointing out the conviction "That as a public University we have to continue supporting the program within the institution and the inclusion initiatives in access to higher education."

In the instance, each of the HEIs showed part of their operation, so that the regional authority knew what was currently being worked on in the area, and then moved on to a round of questions. The main news was the announcement of the continuity of PACE for this year, hoping to be able to work on the pending challenges that the Program has for 2018 and also continue with the work in each of the educational establishments supported by each of the entities. of higher education in the Coquimbo Region.

Since 2015, the PACE Program began an escalation stage until entering its regime stage. It is in that year that the University of La Serena was incorporated as a higher education institution in the implementation of the PACE Program in the Coquimbo Region, starting with six educational establishments: Liceo Estela Ávila Molina de Perry of the commune of Ovalle, Liceo Alberto Gallardo Lorca de Punitaqui, Nicolás Federico Lohse High School in Los Vilos, Pedro Regalado Videla High School in Andacollo, Salamanca Municipal High School and Samuel Román Rojas High School in Combarbalá.

By 2016, the PACE ULS Accompaniment Program was growing and opening new opportunities for young people, which translates into a new challenge: the academic success of all students admitted to higher education thanks to the Program, with the College joining it. of Arts Pedro Aguirre Cerda of La Serena, and the Raúl Silva Henríquez School and the El Ingenio School of Administration and Commerce of the commune of Ovalle.

This year, the Program had a new stage of escalation at the University of La Serena, since it received the Gabriela Mistral High School and the Marta Brunet Technical High School of La Serena and the Pedro Pablo Muñoz School of La Higuera, the latter being the only commune until the date that did not include the implementation of this Program.

With the insertion of these three new educational establishments, the PACE Program of the school has a number of 1.605 young students who are being accompanied.

It is highlighted that in the last two years, 66 students have entered in 2017 and 80 in 2018 through entry via PACE quota at the University of La Serena, who are supported in their first year of university life by the Education Support team. Under the motto “Diverse voices, shared commitments”, the 2018 NAFSA international fair brought together more than 9.500 people from 3.500 universities in 110 countries around the world. "This event allowed the ULS and other higher education institutions to present their educational offers, establish contacts with other related institutions, explore opportunities for academic and student mobility," reported the representative of the Faculty of Humanities before the ULS International Relations Commission and academic of the Department of Arts and Letters, Elvis Campos.

As explained by the Dean(s) of the Faculty of Humanities, this fair also included the holding of a large number of workshops, courses and private meetings of various kinds. In addition, plenary meetings were held with international personalities such as Terry Gross, Joyce Banda and Laura W. Bush.

"Since 2017 we have been working in alliance with Learn Chile, a program that allows us to work on the positioning of our institution abroad, strengthening the internationalization of the offer of higher education programs that we have in force," explained the Rector of the University. from La Serena, Dr. Nibaldo Avilés.

As part of the activities developed by the PMI ULS 1401, the Ineergias team together with students from different careers held an educational day at this establishment for the second consecutive year.

Within the framework of the conference "Science visits your School" carried out by Ineergias Educa, part of the team together with students of different careers from the University of La Serena participated in different activities at the Luis Braille School, an establishment that serves about 60 boys, girls and young people with different degrees of visual impairment.

With the aim of promoting environmental education, arousing concern in students about sustainable development and raising awareness in the educational community, various activities were carried out, including the radio drama of the book "Lycal, Solar Parks in the Desert", next text to be published and that it was created by the Ineergias team for distribution in the educational establishments with which they work. Along with this, the students also learned about water, waste, territory and energy through the interactive game "Where are we going", they also put together educational didactic models of solar panels and learned about Non-Conventional Renewable Energies.

On the occasion, the Ineergias Team participated, a group of students from different University careers, who work together with Ineergias Educa, collaborating from their different academic areas to promote sustainability both outside and inside the ULS. They were the ones in charge of giving life to the characters of the story, in addition to being monitors in the dynamics and games prepared to entertain and educate the children throughout the day.

Marcela Pastén, in charge of the work with educational establishments at Ineergias Educa, highlighted the interest of the educational community in this day and commented that "the activity was quite playful and interesting, we were able to transmit to the children a different way of teaching science, I saw them very happy and we were able to integrate the work of students from the University. This workshop is important because it transmits the knowledge of the University to the community, for this reason, we decided as a team to take this knowledge to the classroom through games and dynamic activities”.

In order to provide new tools and techniques for body expression, relaxation and stress management and use them in the daily life of different professionals, the Graduate Monitoring Office of the University of La Serena has carried out skills workshops for life, seeking to strengthen the interpersonal relationships of students, graduates and graduates, as well as improve their emotional intelligence and social skills.

This process, which also seeks the physical, emotional, cognitive and affective-social development and integration of the students, aims to invite students who are pursuing a degree to be active participants in these meetings that, in turn, go hand in hand. with the loyalty policy of the Graduate Monitoring Office.

07ose workshop2The delivery of tools and techniques is carried out through experiential workshops where students can, through music and movement - in the case of biodanza - connect with their self-awareness, allowing the integration of their emotions and expression; Also learn about self-control and introspection issues to manage stress and emotions.

Students from different majors have already benefited from these workshops, and have shown themselves to be quite grateful and interested in continuing to receive this type of help, which directly benefits their professional and personal lives.

This continuing education activity was carried out at the Universidad Santiago de Chile through a scholarship.

The educational psychologist, Viviana Romero Elgueda, who works as Executive Coordinator of the Support and Effective Access to Higher Education (PACE) ULS Program, assigned to the Academic Vice-Rector's Office, represented the University of La Serena in the Diploma in Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education from the UNESCO Chair of the University of Santiago de Chile, USACH.

The diploma course, which began in the second semester of 2017, awarded 50 scholarships through the Inclusive Access, Equity and Permanence Program - PAIEP U. de Santiago. One of these scholarships was awarded by the professional of the study house, being the only participant from the northern macrozone.

coordinator diploma2This diploma course is led by Dr. Francisco Javier Gil, academic at the Universidad Santiago de Chile and Director of the UNESCO Chair of Inclusion. Gil is also the manager of the Ranking Score and the Propedeutic Network and PACE Program.

The diploma program's objectives were to generate a critical and updated understanding of international and national perspectives and experiences regarding inclusion and diversity in higher education. From the UNESCO approach, the diploma addressed institutional and training practices to support students usually excluded from university education, whether due to inequalities associated with socioeconomic, ethnic, migratory, gender and/or disability conditions.

The duration of the diploma was 120 chronological hours: 60 face-to-face hours and 60 hours of autonomous work.

The PACE ULS Executive Coordinator pointed out that "the experience of the diploma course allowed for very significant learning since it allowed us to internalize theoretical and practical elements in different topics, such as inclusion in access to higher education, disability, native peoples and migrants. The gender perspective module, also gained special relevance for me, within the framework of the processes that we are experiencing today as a society and at an institutional level. An important aspect of the diploma is the collaborative work with different professionals from other higher education institutions and of other public services.”

In terms of how these learnings can be applied in the professional field, the Executive Coordinator of the PACE ULS Program highlighted that “all the contributions of the diploma will be of great support to us for the development of both the program and within the University and its articulation with the different units that provide services to students, also at the academic level and in undergraduate teaching. Furthermore, what has been learned in the different areas can be projected in collaborative spaces with other institutions, where inclusion is considered the path to respect for differences and assuming diversity as the richness and value that our University has.”
