The award ceremony for the regional version took place last Friday, October 26, at the ULS facilities, with the presence of the selected students (5 from each level), parents and guardians, directors and UTP heads of their schools. and special guests.

In this 2018 version, the first stage took place on Saturday, September 1 at the offices of the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the state campus
and at the Amalia Errazuriz School in the city of Ovalle, who for the third consecutive year has provided its facilities for the event, where the participants from the Province of Limarí went. The selection of the students was carried out by taking a theoretical test for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade levels of the region.

Subsequently, on Saturday, October 6, a second theoretical test was administered to the young finalists of 2nd grade, and an experimental test was administered to the finalist students of 3rd and 4th grade.

The proposal seeks to generate instances of reflection in those who train future teachers and thereby positively impact their practices.

The Teaching Improvement Unit (UMD) and the Integrated Management of Pedagogies Unit (UGIP) extend the invitation to participate in the first version of Teaching Dialogues in Initial Teacher Training (FIP).

The proposal seeks to generate instances of reflection in those who train future teachers and thereby positively impact their practices. The experience that the UMD has built from 2012 to date will contribute to the work of the “Evaluation of the FIP curricular redesign” subunit that the UGIP develops.

FIP Teaching Dialogues will develop its proposal from Wednesday, November 07th - on a fortnightly basis - between 15:00 p.m. and 16:30 p.m., in the UMD facilities (entrance side of the ULS Central Library), proposing as goals to achieve the systematization of experiences in the classroom through tools for the analysis of their practices such as logs, video recordings and feedback, among others.

To manage the activity, those who plan to attend are asked to complete the registration form. More information by email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

renewable energies

The funds from CONICYT's NETWORKS contest, which supports the formation of international networks between research centers, will allow collaborative work between undergraduate and graduate students and academics from the University of La Serena with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

For a decade now, the Coquimbo Region has been affected by a severe drought, causing electricity costs to rise steadily. This is why the Estrella Region has stood out in the country for being a pioneer in the use of renewable energy, due to the optimal geographical conditions it has. Thus, the University of La Serena, through Ineergias, seeks to deliver solutions that are in line with energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Under this premise, Dr. Adriana Mera and Dr. Carlos Rodríguez, from the Multidisciplinary Research Institute in Science and Technology, dependent on the Vice-Rector's Office for Research and Postgraduate Studies of the ULS, have developed a study focused on energy generation and decontamination of water and air, also considering the environmental needs of the area. Through research they have managed to be awarded the Support Project for the formation of international networks for researchers in the initial stage of Conicyt.

The awarded funds finance international mobility and dissemination, which will facilitate joint work with UNAM researchers. Thanks to these resources, students and academics will be able to travel in order to strengthen ties and create a Latin American Network that will generate knowledge that in the future will contribute to the resolution of latent problems in Chile and Mexico.

In this sense, Dr. Rodríguez highlighted the development of this collaboration network, stating that “one working alone will not achieve much, that is, the union with this research group from Mexico, which is a little more advanced than us. In terms of equipment, it will strengthen research”, this since they will be able to complement the tools and equipment that each institution has.

In parallel, Dr. Mera also emphasized the importance of this type of research not being limited to the theoretical, pointing out that "it is necessary to go beyond the paper, we must think about how what is worked on in the laboratory can be passed to real life so that it has an impact on the community”, in relation to the development of technologies that use solar radiation to generate energy, can be carried out on a larger scale to solve future problems.

Along with the above, he highlighted his commitment as researchers to try to raise people's awareness: “these projects must not only go hand in hand with regulations, but also educate people so that they know that caring for the environment is important for the environment.” development”, he concluded.

academic presentation

Dr. Arlyn Orellana spoke about the values associated with technology in relation to people with disabilities.

The academic of the Department of Social Sciences, attached to the Faculty of Cs. Social and Economic Sciences of the University of La Serna, Dr. Arlyn Orellana McBride, participated as a speaker in the Multidisciplinary Meeting of Science and Communication, which was held this October 26 at the Alberto Hurtado University, Santiago.

It was the first meeting of its kind in Chile, in which around 200 people from the field of communications and scientific research participated. The activity brought together exponents of the professional and academic community dedicated to the issues of public communication of science (CPC) to discuss the current challenges in the matter, such as reducing the gender gap, improving the community dedicated to these topics and the visibility of science and national scientific production in the media, both in Chile and abroad.

“The experience of participating in this meeting was very relevant, as it allowed the University of La Serena to position itself among the institutions that, in addition to doing science, seek to disseminate this knowledge. On the other hand, I had the opportunity to strengthen academic ties with different specialists in both science communication and scientific dissemination and teaching of science in Chile,” commented Dr. Orellana.

Regarding the presentation “Values associated with technology in relation to people with disabilities”, the academic indicated that the results of a research on the values associated with technologies and people with disabilities (PSD) in Chile were presented. through qualitative analysis of journalistic texts.

“The results indicate a majority presence of references that convey a positive image of technological techniques and devices. Among the positive evaluations, the idea that technologies provide opportunities, helps to have more independence and produces improvements in the quality of life of the PSD stands out. The most relevant negative characteristics found convey the idea of technology as an element of difficulty within society; as well as difficult to access due to its high cost,” he explained.
